The journal was kept while Private Zimmer served in the Second Cavalry (the so-called "Montana Battalion") for one year, from March 1, 1877 through March 1, 1878. During this time, his unit saw action in numerous battles in present-day Montana. With five maps, and five photos, including one showing a sample page of Zimmer's journal. The journal was edited and annotated by Jerome A. Greene.
