Stahl's memoirs of growing up in farm country in the American Middle West in the latter half of the 19th century. In this work, the author describes the life of the early settlers and farm families. He went on to become an editor of a farm paper and a writer for other publications, as well as an active member of the Farmers' National Congress. Stahl was an advocate for rural mail and parcel post service and other important rural causes. He became friends with many authors and profiles some of them in this work.
