Ernest Dieffenbach was the first trained scientist to live and work in New Zealand. This is the first edition of his travel work, in which he provides an account his travels under the auspices of the New Zealand Company. Dieffenbach was one of the first Europeans to visit the Rotomahana area in New Zealand. With the very scarce four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Volume II. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, though faded to the spines, with marks to the rear board of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound.
