Jean-François Ducis - Hamlet [with] âoedipe Chez Admã¨Te [with] le Roi Lear; Jean Sans-Terre [with] Abufar; Correspondence Du Thomas Avec Ducis [with] Epitres; Epitres [with] Poesies Diverses

 1568970827,
Paris, -, 1844. Leather. This miniature leather bound set contains adaptations of Shakespeare by French eighteenth century dramatist Jean-Francois Ducis. The works and adaptations of French dramatist Jean-Francois Ducis are collected in these miniature volumes. Published in French. The present collection beings with Ducis' adaptation of Hamlet, followed by ÂOedipe chez Admète in 1778 which combined and imitated the versions of Euripides and Sophocles, and secured him the chair in the Academy left vacant by the death of Voltaire. Alongside an adaptation of King Lear and Othello, the collection also includes his Ducis' own original play portraying the desert life of Abufar, as well as the author's letters and poems. Ducis was noted for his translations of Shakespeare, which themselves often became the basis for translations into Italian and the languages of Eastern Europe. His approach involved renaming characters and revising plots, for instance, in his version of Othello, the eponymous character reconciles with Desdemona and pardons the chastened Iago. In a red quarter calf binding over patterned boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, a little more so to the rear of the book comprising volumes 3 and 4. A little bumped and rubbed to the extremities. A little rubbed to the joints and the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from a couple of darker patches in the latter two volumes, pages are generally lightly age-toned with some light foxing throughout. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
