The English Nonconformist clergyman and writer John Angell James defends the reopening of the Birmingham Theatre in this very scarce volume. Having enjoyed a relatively successful career as a preacher, James suddenly grew in popularity around 1814 and published numerous books on practical subjects related to Christian life. Local municipal issues were also important to James, this pamphlet he justifies the re-establishment of the Birmingham Theatre following its destruction four years earlier. As well as exploring the local benefits of the theatre, James also exposes and censures examples of literary plagiarism. Unbound. Externally, sound. The front page is a little grubby, with a few chips to the fore edge of the page and some light bumping to the extremities. Internally, the binding is tender. The volume is divided into four main clusters; the first few pages are disbound, followed by a cluster between pages 2 and 32, from 32 to 104, followed by three disbound leaves to the rear.
