The scarce first edition of this humorous account of smoking, published by an eighteenth century cigar seller, and illustrated throughout. This humorous celebration of tobacco and smoking includes the assertion that 'in this world, the great thing, that which must be considered as pre-eminent, is happiness - and great happiness is to be found in Tobacco, and from Tobacco&apos. The author, George Thomas Fisher, dedicates the work to 'Glorious people! Smokers!', and includes chapters with titles including 'different kinds of tobacco', 'statistics of tobacco', 'tobacco and Byron', and 'of the pipe as a means of public instruction&apos. One particularly interesting section, titled 'prophecy for 1945' predicts the future of smoking in England.Illustrated with a frontispiece and vignette illustrations by W.A. and F.G. Delamotte.With six pages of advertisements to the rear.The first edition of this scarce and entertaining work. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, smart. Wraps lightly age toned. Small losses to head and tail of front wrap fore edge. Light marks to front wrap and back strip, with losses of paper to spine head and tail. Price blacked out to tail of front wrap.
