The first popular novel by Lion Feuchtwanger, "Jud Süß," rendered into the English language by Willa and Edwin Muir under the title of "Power." This is the story of Joseph Süß Oppenheimer, meant to be a study of the ill effects of greed and ambition. The author was a Bavarian Jew who staunchly opposed the rising National Socialist German Workers Party (or Nazis) in the 1920s and 30s.
