At that time, lengthy trains of settlers' wagons threaded across the high plains, alarming the Indian tribes and sometimes resulting in attacks. Captain Fitch, as a member of the Seventh Iowa Cavalry, was responsible for assisting these pioneers make a safe passage across the prairie and saw these conflicts in person. Includes an introduction by John D. McDermott, and end notes by Clyde C. Walton.
