[16] + 384 pp. 8vo. contemporary black calf, much worn, cracked, chipped 1 inch at top front corner and heel. Title-page missing about 1/2-1 inch at fore-edge, does not appear to affect text; early ink notes to title-page and three nineteenth-century ink ownerships to recto of the second leaf (Nicholas Gilman, Tristram Gilman, and Joseph Gilman); the three pages following the title page also have some shallow loss to fore-edge, not affecting text. Pp. 375-384 creased at fore-edge. Rare. Matthias Martini (Martinius) (1572-1630), a German Calvinist divine, educator, and philologist, was educated at Herborn Academy under Johannes Piscator and returned there to teach early in his career, at the time this book was published. Later he became the rector of the college of Bremen and did much to improve that institution. His fame as a scholar is built principally upon his LEXICON PHILOLOGICUM of the Latin language, first published in 1623, that went through many editions. (Platts.
