With seven folding plates of diagrams and a complete logarithmic table. The Jesuit College of San Antao was the first Jesuit foundation in Portugal (1553). Classes in mathematics began in 1590. Considered a fine university, San Antao was unusual in that the classes, like this book, were in Portuguese, most likely because the students came from all levels of society and could not be expected to know Latin. The college closed in 1759 with the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portugal. This is an interesting survival of early Jesuit teaching. Lacks frontispiece and title page. Otherwise internally fine. In original spotted calf boards and gilt spine, tender at the hinges, worn at extremities, and partially repaired with cloth. Two copies in OCLC. Rare. As is. .
