Dod..., 1752. 8vo, pp. [xiv], 180 [ 181 - 182 adverts], engraved frontispiece, title-page in red and black, contemporary calf, gilt spine; lacks label, front joint cracked, but firm. The first translation into English, by John Hall, of Longinus was published in 1652, but it was Boileau's French translation in 1674 that led to the word "sublime" being used in an English translation in 1698. Smith's translation was first published in 1739.
