Originally published in Lloyd's Magazine between 1918 and 1920 under the title The Laugh, The Arrow of Gold revolves around a love triangle between the unnamed narrator, Dona Rita and the Confederate veteran Captain Blunt. The story is set against the backdrop of the late 19th century struggle between Spanish centralists and traditionalists, known as the Third Carlist War. The first edition, second state, with the A missing to the running title on page 67. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, with a some discolouration of the spine. Bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with a small closed tear to the head. Internally, firmly bound.
