John Fowles, who like Hardy is a resident and lover of Dorset, was enthralled by the photographs and their unique documentary quality. He collaborated with the historian Jo Draper for this volume, to produce a compelling interpretation of Hardy's England in the Victorian era, alongside reproductions of the photographs.
