He published this collection for Christmas entertainments, intending the stories to be read aloud on Christmas Eve. Touchingly, in the preface of the 1919 first edition James points out that these are more cheerful horror stories, with only one mention of the war.This collection includes 'The Residence at Whitminster', 'The Diary of Mr Poynter', 'An Episode of Cathedral History', 'The Story of a Disappearance and an Appearance', and 'Two Doctors&apos.Two of these stories had originally been published in 'Cambridge Review&apos. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart, with some light marks to the boards and spine, heavier to the tail of the boards.
