Ink inscription to the title page, dated 1844. The author John Davis (1774-1854) first went to sea in an East Indiaman, joining Sir Edmund Nagle's frigate Artois in 1794. He rose to become acting lieutenant before leaving the navy in 1797. The Post-Captain was published anonymously in the first edition, and had considerable success despite receiving mixed critical reviews. Rebound in a half calf binding. Externally in lovely condition.
