Bound in the original pictorial cloth with gilt lettering. With a colour frontispiece, engraved title page, nine out of eleven colour plates and numerous engraved illustrations. Missing two plates. Chatterbox was a weekly halfpenny paper for older children, first printed in 1866. This book contains issues No. 1 through to No. 52 of the paper from the year 1903. Containing a wide range of short stories and poetry, accompanied by entertaining illustrations. John Erskine Clarke was a British clergyman who issued the first parish magazine and founded a range of churches and schools in Battersea. With the publisher's advertisements to the rear of the book. With the previous owner's gift inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1908. In the original full cloth pictorial binding. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the extremities and bumping to the spine. Some light marks to the boards. Hinges starting but firm. Spotting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Offsetting to the front free endpaper. Previous owner's ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Internally, binding weak. The plate on page 176 is loose. Page 1 of the publisher's advertisements is also loose. A few marks throughout, although the text is generally bright and clean. The illustration on page 189 has been coloured by the previous owner.
