Sydney Smith published several sermons and religious work throughout his career. His reputation among contemporaries was that of a humorist and was well known for making jest of religious subjects. He is recognised in the United States for his rhyming recipe for salad dressing. With a bookseller's label to the rear paste-down and 24 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume one. In full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with some shelf wear to the edges and a few closed tears to the top and bottom of the spine. Hinges are starting but firm. A few light marks to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Binder's label to the rear paste-down of volume one. Bookseller's label to the rear paste-down of volume two. Internally, volume one is firmly bound but with some creasing to the binding throughout. Binding is weak in volume two, with pages 17 to 30 loosening.
