Witherby on the front paste-down end-paper. Richard Payne Knight's poem "The Landscape" and Uvedale Price's Essay on the Picturesque were, of course, two of the most important works on the aesthetics of large-scale gardening and rural improvement to be published in the 1790s and early part of the 19th century. Marshall seems more sympathetic to the ideas, principles, and practices of Capability Brown's neo-classical imitations than he does to the advocacy of rough, wild external nature preferred by Knight and Price.
