London, George Allen, 1891. First edition. Cloth. A first edition of this collection of poetry by Eton schoolmaster William Johnson Cory, in lovely condition. The first collected edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the errata slip. An anonymously published collection of poetry by William Johnson Cory (1823-1892), an English schoolmaster remembered for his translation of Callimachus' 'Heraclitus&apos. He was an assistant master at Eton from 1845, and he penned the lyrics to the 'Eton Boating Song'; however, in 1872 he was forced to resign due a parent's complaint regarding an 'indiscreet letter', indicating a level of intimacy between pupils and their tutors. It is uncertain whether he was guilty of being a pederast, or whether his intentions were in fact innocent. This 1891 edition, published by George Allen, contains 85 poems, omitting six of the 1858 volume and two of the 1877 book, but adding 20 new poems, three dated 1877, 1885 and 1889. In publisher's original cloth binding. Externally very smart, with only slight bumping to the spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound.
