D'Aulnoy's tales vary from those of the Grimms, as her tales are more conversational in style, so that they might be told in salons. The collection includes 'The Fair With Golden Hair', 'The Bee and the Orange Tree', 'Finette Cendron', 'The Yellow Dwarf', The Princess Carpillon', 'The White Cat', 'Princess Belle-Etoile and Prince Cheri', and more.An early edition of this scarce to find work. Translated to English by J.R. Planche, the second edition thus of this work.Illustrated by noted English artist and engraver, John Gilbert. Including an engraved frontispiece and a further ten engraved plates. One plate has been hand-coloured by a previous owner. Collated and complete. Containing a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown and a previous owner's ink inscription to one of the front free-endpapers, dated 1864. In half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and extremities.
