Largely uncut volume dedicated to Cowdray House, ruins of England's great Tudor houses in the Parish of Easebourne east of Midhurst, West Sussex. An originally fortified manor house built between 1273 and 1284 by Sir John Bohun, it was largely destroyed by fire in 1793 although it remains Grade I listed. The present work consists of a history and study of the ruins with architectural features and chapters concerning Cowdray Park and priory. Written by Sir William H. St. John Hope, English antiquary and foremost authority on English mediaeval architecture. Number two-hundred and five of four-hundred copies printed. Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece tipped in, and fifty-three further plates, including many collotype photogravures and four folding plans, three in colour. Collated, complete.Featuring Gertrude Kinnell's bookplate to front pastedown, noted suffragist and art collector. In the original publisher's half paper vellum binding over paper covered boards. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear, lightly bumped to extremities of spine and boards, general light soiling, a touch of darkening to spine.
