A scarce, Limited Edition of this collection of passionate letters with a much contested authorship; scholars now believe it to be a work of epistolary fiction written by Gabriel-Joseph de La Vergne, a minor peer, a friend of Madame de Sevigne, the poet Boileau, and the dramatist Jean Racine.To the verso of the title page it is remarked that 'this First Edition on Van Gelder paper consists of 925 copies&apos. The first edition thus, being the first American edition translated by Edgar Prestage, and published by Thomas Bird Mosher.Former owner's inscription to front free endpaper, binder's stamp to verso of front free endpaper.In a bright full calf signed binding from Otto Schulze, this is a lovely edition of this passionate work, first published in 1669. In a full calf signed binding, with gilt detailing. Rubbing to back strip head and tail, with light discolouration to back strip. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
