Illustrated with charming engraved plates. The scarce first edition thus of this early nineteenth century translation of Goethe's epistolary novel, first published in German in 1774, and first translated into English in 1779. It would go on to have a profound influence on the Romantic movement in England.This is the first translation from Fred. Gotzberg, who was assisted by an unnamed 'English Literary Gentleman&apos. In the preface, this gentleman described Gotzberg as 'a native of Germany' with 'some knowledge of Werter's family&apos.Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and six further plates, from Hopwood. Collated, complete.With six pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the original paper covered boards. Contemporary owner's inscription to front board, and further marks to boards. Back strip absent. Rear board held by one cord only. Front joint starting, with board holding firm. Internally, firmly bound.
