A wonderfully illustrated first edition of this humorous and satirical poem following William Combe"s comic character "Doctor Synatax". William Combe (1742 – 1823) was a British writer whose early life is considered that of an adventurer. He is chiefly remembered as the author of The Three Tours of Doctor Syntax, a comic poem, illustrated by artist Thomas Rowlandson's color plates, that satirised William Gilpin. With an ink inscription from the previous owner to the verso of the front endpaper. In green cloth case, externally smart with some slight rubbing to the extremities and tide mark to the top right of the front board. In original binding with paper to the boards. Front board is loosening and rear board has come away. Previous owners ink inscription to verso of front endpaper. Some age-toning and spotting to recto of rear endpaper.
