The scarce first edition of this illustrated history of the role of the Irish Guards in the Second World War, the work of Major Desmond J. L. Fitzgerald. As the author explains in his preface, 'as a boy my ambition was to become an Irish Guardsman', with Fitzgerald explaining he did indeed join in 1911. This account of the involvement of the Irish Guards in the second world war is based upon 'the admirable War Diaries kept by a series of Battalion Intelligence Officers', and is divided into five parts, beginning with a discussion of the 1st Battalion in Norway, and concluding with accounts from the 2nd and 3rd Battalion in North-West Eutope.Illustrated throughout with photographic plates, twenty plates, of maps, and two folding maps. Collated, complete.With the former owner's inscription 'To Stephen with love from WL', dated March 1951, to the front pastedown.This WL is a member of the Law family of Marble Hill House, Donegal. Lota Law and Hugh Alexander Law, an Irish nationalist politician, hosted a number of prominent Irish figures at the house, including W. B. Yeats, Jack Yeats, P.H. Pearse, William Orpen, G.K. Chesterton, George William Russell and Hilaire Belloc. Stephen Law, their son, was himself a member of the Irish Guards. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head.
