Written by Thomas Walker Horsfield, a topographer and historian best known for this work, which was considered a standard for its time.Complete in two volumes. The first and only edition of this important work, complete in two volumes. With the ownership bookplate of Ernest Bryan Gipps, a musician and the leader of the Folkestone Municipal Orchestra.Both volumes are illustrated with a frontispiece engraving, a folding map backed on cloth and wood engravings through the text. Volume I is also illustrated with twenty-nine plates. Volume II is illustrated with twenty-five plates, as well as an extra watercolour painting opposing page 209; this was painted by T. C. V. Collated, complete.An excellent first edition of this delightful illustrated history of Sussex. In a quarter crushed morocco binding. Externally generally smart; a little rubbed to the head of the spines and to the tail of volume I, otherwise slight occasional rubbing. Internally generally firmly bound; front hinge is strained at the title page to the first volume. Pages are a touch spotted. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .
