Imbert de Saint-Amand was a French diplomat and historian, prolific author of publications on the women of the court of Louis XIV, Louis XV, as well as Marie-Antoinette, Marie Louise, Empress Josephine, and others in his 'Famous women of the French Court' series. The present volume is a first edition of this work, held institutionally by three library only, dated from Copac. A very scarce copy. The book tells of the Court of Empress Josephine, first wife of Emperor Napoleon I, from the beginning of the empire, with an account of the etiquette of the Imperial Palace, Napoleon's gallantries, and the court at Fontainebleau. Illustrated with a frontispiece. Translated from the French by Thomas Sergeant Perry. Rebacked with the original boards and spine restored, new endpapers. Externally sound with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, light soiling to the boards and darkening to the spine. Library shelf number inked to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Discreet institutional stamps to the recto frontispiece, title page, the occasional margin, and the last leaf of text. library location in pencil to the imprint page.
