The scarce first edition of this work.Complete in two volumes.The collected works of James Harris, an eighteenth century politician and gammarian.Harris was best known for his work 'Hermes, a Philosophical Inquiry Concerning Universal Grammar', which championed linguistic prescription. He was much interested in the Greek and Latin classics, seeking out manuscripts that went on to influence his own writings, much evident within these two volumes.He was a great lover of music, being a friend of the composer Handel, and was also mentioned in the journals of Fanny Burney. Harris wrote a number of pastorals, including 'Damon and Amaryllis', which was produced by David Garrick at Drury Lane. Volume I, including 'Three Treatises', and 'Hermes&apos. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, and two plates.Volume II, including 'Philosophical Arrangements', and 'Philological Inquiries'Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, and two plates.Collated, complete.Including an account of Harris' life and character by his son, James Harris the Earl of Malmesbury. Malmesbury was a diplomat who worked across the world, including during peace negotiations during the French Revolutionary War. In a diced calf binding, rebacked with the original boards restored. Externally, smart, with some light marks and a little rubbing to the boards. Head of the rear boards are a little faded. Light bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound.
