The novels are densely allusive and deal with very political and ideological themes. Critical responses were varied following the book's publication in 1970, but current scholarship is examining how these novels fit into the modern genre of dystopic fiction. Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990) was a expatriate British novelist whose most famous work is 'The Alexandria Quartet&apos.
