He was awarded the Silver Polar Medal in 1909, and was due to join Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914, but was deployed to Flanders instead. In the publisher's original quarter calf binding with paper covered boards. Externally rather worn; loss tot he head of the spine, which is rubbed to the joints and the tail. Boards are discoloured.
