Henry Cockburn - Letters Chiefly Connected with the Affairs of Scotland, from Henry Cockburn to Thomas Francis Kennedy, 1815 to 1852

 1569598185,
London, William Ridgway, 1874. First edition. Cloth. A first edition copy of this collection of letters concerning Scotland's history, from 1815 to 1852. Including a frontispiece portrait of Thomas Francis Kennedy, dated 1822. This is a chiefly political work that includes letters from 1815 to 1852, during a time of great representational transition in Scotland. It appears to have been compiled so these letters would not become lost to the people of Scotland, to whom they belong. Henry Thomas Cockburn of Bonaly, Lord Cockburn was a Scottish lawyer, judge and literary figure. He served as Solicitor General for Scotland between 1830 and 1834. He became a distinguished advocate, and ultimately a judge. He was one of the leaders of the Whig party in Scotland in its days of darkness prior to the Reform Act of 1832. Thomas Francis Kennedy, Scottish politician, was born near Ayr in 1788. He studied for the bar and became advocate in 1811. Having been elected Member of Parliament for the Ayr Burghs in 1818, he devoted the greater part of his life to the promotion of liberal reforms. This book contains the odd pencil notation, and an ink inscription to pages 1 and 540. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Bumping to the head and tail of spine and extremities. Some rubbing to the joints and tail of spine, resulting in minor loss to the cloth. Book is slightly cocked. Internally, front and rear hinges are strained but remain firm. Front free-endpaper has a small tear. Internally, generally firmly bound. The odd spot to the free-endpapers and title page. Contemporary ink inscriptions to page 1 and page 540 as well as a few pencil notations throughout, not affecting the text. Otherwise, pages are bright and clean. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .
