ETIENNE, Charles - Dictionarium Historicum, Geographicum, Poetarum

1671. (ESTIENNE, Charles). Dictionarium Historicum, Geographicum, Poeticum, Gentium, Hominum, Deorum Gentilium, Regionum.. etc. Authore Carolo Stephano. Oxford, Excudebat G.H. et G.D. sumptibus John Williams, George West, Amos Curteyne & John Crosley, 1671. Folio. 8,830pp. Second Oxford edition, first published 1670. This famous dictionary of people, places, names, antiquities, coins, deities, literature, etc. originally published in 1530 by Charles Estienne, of the celebrated family of printers, was enormously corrected, re-edited, and added to by Nicolaus Lloyd of Oxford "An harmless, quiet man, and an excellent philologist," (DNB) who spent 30 years on the project. The title in ink, in gothic script, on the fore-edge, is characteristic of early libraries, where the books were shelved spine-in. Light toning of paper, and some marginal nicks to title, not affecting printed area. Otherwise fine in a modern cloth binding. (Cordell 123. Lowndes 2507. BL 1487.w.4.). .
