Second English language translation, within a year of the French edition. 12mo. xii,263 pp. Contemporary binding of red morocco-backed marbled boards, with gilt-stamped spine title. The binding is darkened at spine and top-edges of boards; fore-corned are rubbed and rounded. One leaf (E2) has marginal loss at bottom forecorner, not affecting text. It is clean within, and a sound and about very good copy overall. Mme de Genlis (1746-1830) was a prolific and very popular writer in her day, as well as a talented teacher. Her works were translated almost immediately into English. And one of her former pupils, Louis Philippe, became King of France. .
