STERNE, Laurence - Lettres de Sterne a Ses Amis 1789. STERNE, Laurence. LETTRES DE STERNE A SES AMIS. La Haye, 1789. 12mo. 227pp. A translation of "Original Letters of the Late Reverend Mr. Laurence Sterne, Never Before Published" (London, Longmans, 1788). The letters are thought to be mostly spurious, and actually written by William Combe, an English humorist best known as the author of the "Dr. Syntax" series. The single OCLC entry, based on a copy at Cambridge University, gives the translator as Durand de Saint-Georges. The Cambridge copy, also 1789, has only 223 pages, and a slightly different imprint line ("La Haye et se trouve a Paris: chez Lagrange"). Neither French edition is in the British Museum. A very nice, unsophisticated copy, somewhat foxed throughout, in the original half-calf and speckled boards, with gilt lettering-piece. Edges tinted yellow. faint rubbing and small bumps to corners. Extremely rare, and perhaps unique. (Not in NUC). . USD 425.00 [Appr.: EURO 376.25 | £UK 320.5 | JP¥ 61593] Book number 77358is offered by:
