This work was intended for a younger readership, and details the missionary work carried out by the Reverend John Batchelor in Hokkaido and other areas of North Japan. John Batchelor (1855-1944) was an Anglican missionary, his work taking him to the Ainu people of Japan, the original occupants of Hokkaido. He penned an Ainu-English-Japanese dictionary, founded schools and churches in the area and was a critic of the Japanese for their treatment of the Ainu people.Illustrated profusely throughout with vignette photography and illustrations. In a decorative cloth binding with wonderful gilt detail to the front cover. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally very smart, only the slightest bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Gift inscription to the front blank.
