MOTHERWELL (William): - Poems Narrative and Lyrical.

Glasgow: David Robertson..., 1832. FIRST EDITION. 12mo, 161 x 95 mms., pp. [ii], 232, attractively bound in full contemporary hard-grain plum morocco, ornate gilt border on covers, spine ornatley gilt in compartments, all edges gilt; slight wear to front joint, but a very good copy. William Motherwell (1797 - 1835) began writing poetry at an early age, and this is a rather late production before his his untimely death in 1835. Reviewing a later American reprint, the anonymous reviewer in The North American Review, (January, 1842), claimed that "Some of the poems contained in this volume are very remarkable productions. The writer's mind seems to have been deeply imbued with the peculiar spirit of northern literature, which he has reproduced with singular beauty and effect, though somewhat softened by the elegance of modern civilizaion. The bold, daring, abrupt character of the old Scaldic and ballad poetry, seems to have taken full possession of his genius." The volume was frequently reprinted, but the first edition seems to be uncommon in the market, though not in libraries.
