This was a popular work, first published in 1829; it ran a number of editions, and was translated into German.Gothic architecture was popular in Europe between the late twelfth century and the sixteenth century, and it was followed by Renaissance architecture. It is characterised by pointed arches and flying buttresses, and is seen in particular in churches, cathedrals and abbeys. The movement was revived again in the nineteenth century.Written by Matthew Holbeche Bloxam (1805-1888), a British antiquary, author and archaeologist.Illustrated with two hundred woodcuts by Thomas Orlando Sheldon Jewitt.Bound with sixteen pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, a little bumped to the head and tail of the spine resulting in some loss to the cloth.
