After graduating from Harvard, Jackson Jr. studied in Paris under Louis and while there made an important study of a cholera epidemic. It was published on his return to the United States (1832), but he died shortly thereafter of tuberculosis pericarditis. His father, James Jackson, also a physician, taught at Harvard Medical School and was largely responsible for the foundation of Massachusetts General Hospital, never recovered from the loss and resigned his post at the medical school in consequence.
