A very bright, scarce first edition of this Gustave Dore edition of Pierre Dupont's depiction of the legend of the Wandering Jew. A first edition thus, being the first edition of this work with Dore's illustrations. Collated, complete, with twelve plates.This work is a poem on the legend with the prologue and epilogue by Pierre Dupont. Ernest Dore has written the pianoforte accompaniment which is present at the start of this work. Translated into English, with critical remarks by George W Thornbury. Thornbury was the first biographer of J M W Turner. There is a bibliographical notice to this work by Paul Lacroix. Dore was a printmaker, artist and illustrator. He worked primarily with wood engraving and his works were prolific. He had a very successful illustrated Bible which earned him a major exhibition in London which later lead to the opening and foundation of the Dore Gallery in Bond Street. Dore depicts the legend of the Wandering Jew's immortal journey from the crucifixion of Christ to Judgement Day. The beautiful monochrome artwork is filled with Dore's usual dramatic style, constructed with biblical, epic conflict woven into each stroke, displaying this terrible legend in all its glory. With sweeping, powerful illustrations befitting the legend, Gustave Dore's collected work is enchantingly presented in this extremely scarce volume. In a full cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. A few light marks to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright. The occasional light spots to pages.
