A tontine (named after Lorenzo Tonti, a Neapolitan banker fl. c. 1653) is a financial insurance gamble in which an initial investment by participants is pooled, with returns shared by all who survive. The death of participants over time enhances the annuities for those still living until just a single survivor enjoys huge returns. This is a sweeping 19th century historical novel beginning with the Battle of Waterloo and following the course of a specific investment. Book Club Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Very Good with no dust jacket .
