On the separation of Holland and Belgium.Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp is among the greatest statesmen in Dutch history and could be considered the founder of the modern Netherlands. He asked the Prince of Orange to become monarch and king of the Netherlands and laid the foundation for today's constitution and parliamentary democracy.
