Melissen, Antoon & David Leiber - Jan Schoonhoven. AS NEW, STILL SEALED

Rotterdam, Nai 010 Publishers. Hardcover. 188 pp. 4to. Many photo's etc. in as new condition. This is the Dutch language edition. ISBN 9789462082489. Jan Schoonhoven (1914-1994) has become world famous for his sculptural reliefs and works on paper. For almost forty years Schoonhoven worked on the development of his reliefs from papier-mache, paper and cardboard - in addition to his job as a civil servant at the PTT, the Dutch postal service. This monograph places Jan Schoonhoven in an international context for the first time, as an active and influential player in European post-war developments in art. The early years are extensively discussed: the influence of, for example, Paul Klee and Jackson Pollock, and his participation in the Dutch Informele Group in the late 1950s. Schoonhoven's involvement in the Dutch Nul group and the international ZERO movement is also highlighted. The monograph also shows that Schoonhoven's oeuvre continued to develop, even in the years after 'Nul'. This monograph with many previously unknown works and photographs sheds new light on the work and life of this twentieth-century 'master of white'. Antoon Melissen is an art historian and author of publications with an emphasis on Dutch art from the late fifties, sixties and seventies in a European context.
