He was also a member of the congregation of the Oratory. Caluso was an excellent linguist, learning English, French, Spanish, and Arabic, and also knew Coptic, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. At the University of Turin he taught Oriental languages, and was also the director of the astronomical observatory of Palazzo Madama. The author, Italian philologist Carlo Boucheron, was under the guidance of Caluso, who taught him Greek, Hebrew, and Latin.
