With the bookplate of W T Marriott to the front pastedowns. Possibly the bookplate of William Thackeray Marriott, a British barrister and Liberal. Marriott was later a Conservative politician. The second edition of this work. Illustrated, with a frontispiece to each volume. With a memoir of the author by Sir Bartle Frere. Harry Bartle Frere was a British colonial administrator. He was John Hookham Frere's nephew. Bound by Mansell in a lovely tree calf binding, with the binder's stamp to the front endpapers. John Hookham Frere was a diplomat, who was regarded with high esteem in the literary sphere for his translations of Aristophanes. He is also known for his mock Arthurian poem, 'Prospectus and Specimen..&apos. His complete works were first published three years previously in 1871, This is the second edition of his complete works. Uncommon to find this work in such a lovely binding. In a full tree calf binding with gilt stamping to the spines. Externally, very smart with just some light rubbing to the joints and to the spine, heavier to the raised bands. Bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes, W T Marriott. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright with offsetting and scattered spots to the first and last few pages.
