Michiel Jacobus van der Schaft (1829-1889) - [Antique drawing / tekening] Woman washing clothes under a bridge/Vrouw wast kleren onder een brug, ca. 1850.

A large ogival bow frames a genre scene, where a woman is washing some clothes in the waters of a canal. Further on the left, a man on a boat with a child. Towards the background, the bank of the canal with a small house, surrounded by trees. Signed on the bottom left: M:J:S:, in pencil. The preparatory drawing underneath the picture was erased, but some traces are still visible close to the tree top and on the bottom, close to the lower margin. Great is the foreshortening of arch above the woman. Drawing on paper, pen with brown and grey ink, washed in grey over pencil and chalk; total: 261 x 317 mm; four tiny pin holes on the four corners, otherwise in outstanding condition.
