(Published as vol. 15 in the transactions of the Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen ['Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences'], May 1833). First edition. Uhlenbeck, p. 44 and p. 82: 'The grammar left by the gifted Cornets de Groot after his untimely death in 1829 at the age of 25, was, even in its unfinished state, a remarkable work and no doubt the most valuable of the four grammars of the early thirties.': Smith Diehl, Printers and printing in the East Indies to 1850, Vol. I, Batavia, p. 170 and 214/15: 'Cornets de Groot's "Javaansche spraakkunst", which Dr. Gericke edited, was the first publication from the Batavia Government Press to use Javanese letters. Gericke is in the small group of linguists, well-trained and curious, who came to Asia under religious auspices but who devoted their lives to language and intercultural studies.
