The first edition of this work. A series of letters written by William Coxe to William Melmoth, all describing in depth the natural, civil, and political state of Switzerland in the eighteenth century. The forty-three letters look at the journey travelling to Switzerland, the town and abbot of St. Gallen, the abbey of Einsiedeln, the valley of mountain of St. Gothard, Grindelwald and its glacier, Mont Blanc, and much more. Coxe was a historian and priest, who served as a travelling companion and tutor to nobility. He published works about his travels, including 'Account of Russian Discoveries Between Asia and America', 'Travels into Poland, Russia, Sweden and Denmark', and 'Mont Blanc and the Adjacent Alps&apos. Some of the people he accompanied include Lord Herbert, a peer and politician, and Samuel Whitbread, a brewer and Member of Parliament. These letters were written whilst he was accompanying Lord Herbert. Melmoth was an author and commissioner of bankrupts. He sought out studious quiet in the country, writing numerous anonymous essays and poems, as well as publishing 'Letters on Several Subjects', 'Letters of Pliny the Younger', In a full calf binding. Externally, with some rubbing to the boards. Some surface cracks to the spine. Crack to the tail of the front joint. A very little loss to the head of the spine. Light discolouration to the spine. A little bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some scattered spots. Tear to the title page, affecting the text a little. Good . Ill.: None. Good .
