He served in the Austro-Hungarian Army, became governor of the province of Darfur in the Sudan in 1881, where after years of conflict he was captured by Mahdist forces when Khartoum fell. He was held captive for eleven years, eventually escaped and became the Inspector General of the Sudan. 163pp.
