KING, Evan - Children of the Black-Haired People

 1557164870,
New York, Rinehart & Company, 1955. Hardcover. Small 4to. Quarter black cloth with gilt and red spine lettering and red textured paper over boards. viii, 435pp. Pictorial map. Very good. Faint bit of binding wear only, with spine sunned; internally tight and fine; lacks dust jacket. Tight, nice first edition of this Chinese-set novel by the obscure American diplomat Robert Spencer Ward (1906-68) who spent many years in China and wrote under the nom-de-plume Evan King and who is best known for publishing in 1945 his own unauthorized translation of Lao She's 1937 classic "Rickshaw Boy," which he also rewrote, edited and augmented! This "Presentation Copy" (as so stamped in black on front board) bears a front colophon ("This limited edition has been inscribed by the author for presentation to his friends and those of his publisher") boldly signed by King. From the library of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81), and before him of his father, Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), Illinois governor and twice Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. ambassador -- likely Stevenson and Ward (King) circulated among the same diplomatic crowd. .
