Internally tight and fine, with binding a tad edgeworn and rubbed and spine faintly sunned; front flyleaf ownership signature. Nice later printing of ML Giant #37 -- based on binding circa 1950. Lovely pictorial addition: Tipped in facing the title page is a unique frontispiece of sorts -- a superb, heavy stock, steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of a romanticized young Hawthorne. Not dated, but clearly a late 19th century image that perhaps was the frontispiece of an early biography. .
